Zygrib grib files via sailmail

Post by Gorrioncito » 28 Feb 2011 20:28

Hello, I am enjoying Zygrib very much.
I would like to know if there is any way to have zygrib files sent in an automated form by email, so one could recieve them via SSB and Pactor modem. This would be great, as other platforms (e.g. saildocs) do not cover the parameter Cape and cloud cover which are excellent to have.
Thanks for any reply!

Hi,

The answer is yes. Just get the file by mail and open it with zygrib.

There is already couple of discussion about the way to get files through mails. I let you use the function research to find them.

Hello DomH,
Thank you very much for the reply. I realize how to get an emailed grib file via saildoc, but there I am limited to the parameters in the GFS Model: GRD - wind speed, PRMSL - pressure at mean sea level, TMP - surface temperature, HGT - 500mb height and in the NWW3 Model: GRD - wind speed, WAVE - significant wave height and direction, WVPER - significant wave periodicity.
When I have an internet connection I can get a lot more parameters directly through the zygrib program. I would be especially interested in obtaining cloud cover, rainfall, windgust and CAPE through sailmail or any other automated email generating system.
Any idea how this could be done?
Thank you for an answer!

Hi,
NO WAY.
Zygrib is not for sailors, I mean for people at sea more then 1 night a year...(look at the statistic on the subject) unless your are a coastal navigator in which case you can use a "portable" or if you have a (still very expensive) sat connection it also works of course.
Only alternative is to ask Jim to improve/ increase its database which they should be able to do as they recently changed/upgraded their server.
He is very helpful and added the COAMPS wind info (15 kms) for the MED when I did ask him to do so...it took me 2 years of negociation with the US Navy but we now have it...

Hi,
Zygrib is for people who wants to get meteorological data.
Yes you are right, it is not yet a complete tool for sailors that are sailing many days away of connexion other than short waves or satellites.
If anyone wants to develop the mailing interface to get more data that the ones given by saildocs group I am sure that many sailors will be happy. Unfortunately I am not able to do it; if I could do it, it could be possible that i tried to do it.

I am a race officer and a national judge for regatta in Switzerland and I work to put precise data for these functions in zygrib.

So, I am sure that any initiative to improve zygrib will be welcome by the main actor of zygrib.

Bonsoir,
J·aime mes sources d·infos differentes.

Hi,
thank you for the replies! Unfortunately my French is not very good, but I understand some of what SYO2 has said. I am very aware of the other sources for weather, especially the DWD. I receive the weather fax and forecast from there as well. In using these, one has to realize that for example when one looks to the Aegean Sea the forecast is given for two specific points in the middle of that ocean, and depending if you are further west or east things can be very different. Here the detail of grib data is very helpful. I also find the parameter CAPE very intriguing, as for a sailor potential for thunderstorm activity is of great interest. I try to stay as far away as I can!
By chance I have found out, if one adds the word ‘CAPE’ to the command line of a sailmail request email, the parameter is returned, so this is a useful answer to part of my question.

I have been trying to find these but the forum search function seems to only find this conversation. Any help would be great!

I'm trying to get my parents system set up so they can receive grib files via sailmail but am having no luck.

DomH, I am new to the forum (some ability to read French and I would not subject you to my written French!) and, like DomBray, interested in getting GRIB files sent to me by email for sailing purposes. I intend to use either SailMail on SSB or an Iridium phone, not yet selected. Either way, the thought is that zyGrib files are more compact and versatile than SailDocs, so it would be very useful to have access to a means by which I can request files be emailed rather directly downloaded to the zyGrib app. The zyGrib app is tremendous but not useable over the extremely limited internet access possible with sat phones. Your note to DomBray says to search for the How-To on the forum, but I also cannot find anything other than this thread. The zyGrib website instructs visitors to join the forum to get email access for low bandwidth situations, and that is what I have done, but cannot figure out how to employ email for requesting and receiving files.

I found the how-to-email instructions on the ZyGrib website, not the on forum. I have now tried those instructions and the ZyGrib server is not responding with files. After receiving a code from your webpage, I have sent the following message to 'gribauto@zygrib.org' with 'gribauto' only in the subject line:

login: DrRoyce
code: *******
area: 26N82W 100NM
resol: 0.5
days: 1
hours: 6
waves: WW3-GLOBAL
meteo: GFS
compress: BZIP2
WIND PRES PRECIP CAPE
CLOUD TEMP
WVSIG WVSWELL WVWIND

But I have received no response, not even an error message. I generated a second code on the webpage and tried again, with no response. I have altered each of the parameter fields and resent, all with no response.

Is there some basic syntax error I have included but cannot see?

Hi,
The server can't understand your mails because they are written in html mode.
Please, send mails as plain text.
A+
Jacques
